Beginner-to-builder path

Modern robotics roadmap

A staged route from programming and electronics through kinematics, control, ROS 2, simulation, and a portfolio-ready robot project.

Use the official Northwestern Modern Robotics materials for foundations, then learn ROS 2 in order and prove each stage with a small working project.

A practical starting checklist

  1. Foundation: learn Python, basic linear algebra, mechanics, circuits, sensors, and microcontroller I/O.

  2. Robot math: work through frames, rigid-body motion, kinematics, dynamics, planning, and control using Modern Robotics.

  3. Robot software: complete the ROS 2 beginner path, use simulation before hardware, then build and document one complete robot system.
